If you’re being pressured—if someone is really pushing you to sign, pen in hand, and rushing you to commit—you should probably walk away. You’ve already been injured, you’re struggling, and maybe you’ve even lost your car. The last thing you need is an attorney who’s putting a lot of pressure on you to sign. Take your time, and here’s why:
1. Take Your Time Before Signing
In the contract or fee agreement they want you to sign, there’s likely some fine print. Unfortunately, some lawyers include clauses that might not work in your favor. For example, the agreement may state that you’re responsible for costs, filing fees, and other charges. The standard fee might be 33%, but if your case goes to court, that percentage could increase to 40%, and suddenly you might find yourself responsible for as much as 50% of your recovery. Be sure to carefully read and understand exactly what the lawyer is taking from your recovery before you sign. This step is absolutely crucial.
2. Watch for Directing You to Specific Doctors
After you sign, if the attorney starts directing you to see a particular doctor—or if a doctor is strongly recommending a specific attorney—you should see a red flag. These relationships can indicate that the attorney and doctor have a financial connection, which is rarely in the client’s best interest. In my experience, these arrangements seldom work out well for the injured party.
Keep these tips in mind when choosing a personal injury attorney. There are plenty of options out there, so take your time and find someone who truly has your best interests at heart. Drive safely, and take care. Thank you!
