Three tips on finding the right attorney in Phoenix

I’m happy to say that at this point in my life, I don’t need to hire an attorney. The prospect of trying to find the right one is very intimidating and frustrating. I generally would be concerned that the lawyer would charge me too much and not help me.

As an attorney in Phoenix, I know that many lawyers don’t have the best reputation for honesty and integrity. I see the skepticism for potential clients every day. However, there are easy ways to help determine whether or not an attorney is right for you.

First, look at their level of organization. How long did it take for the lawyers call you back? Were they responsive to your questions and concerns? These little details are clues as to how they will treat you if you hire them.

Second, do they offer a fee agreement in writing? Is it clear how much they are going to charge? I once met with an attorney to help me draft a will. My estate is not particularly complicated. The lawyer told me that he would charge me $350 per hour and we would, “see how it goes.” Here’s the deal, any attorney who handles estates for a living would know how long it would take for my documents to be prepared. It shouldn’t be a mystery for the attorney, and it shouldn’t be a mystery for the client. If you don’t know how much it is going to cost, and there is no good explanation as to why you don’t know the general figure–walk away.

Finally, hiring the right attorney in Phoenix may require that you do your research. There are a number of ways to find out if the attorney has been in legal trouble with clients. Take the time to look at online reviews and call other attorneys and ask them if your potential counsel is any good. The more work you do on the front end, the more likely it is that you will get off on the right foot.
