CARLSBAD, N.M. —
Carlsbad Lawyer Shawn Lunsford recently was relieved of his law license by the New Mexico Supreme Court. Why? Because without any advance notice he simply closed up shop. His clients were left completely in the dark.
As a result, the attorney lost his ability to practice law for five years. To make matters worse, Mr. Lunsford was arrested for a DUI the same day he was disbarred. Now he must wait to see how much jail time he is facing.
It seems that he applied the same lesson from his law practice. After getting involved in an auto accident he promptly left the scene.
As DUI attorneys, we have special responsibilities and obligations. We must return phone calls and communicate with our clients when they call us. That’s why we give our cell phone numbers to our clients.
Furthermore, we also know that impaired driving is something to be avoided at all costs. I guess you can say that it doesn’t look good if a DUI lawyer is convicted of a DUI.
Unfortunately for Mr. Lunsford, it sounds like he is going to have to find a different line of business. It really is too bad because all State Bar Associations have good programs for alcohol and substance abuse issues. If Mr. Lunsford was having personal problems, he had options available to him, other than cutting and running.
