A 25-year-old man, identified as Osvaldo Ayala, was fatally injured in a car crash that took place on West Indian School Road early Sunday morning, Phoenix police said.
The accident also left five others injured, however Ayala was the only fatality. Phoenix police are now confirming that impairment was indeed a factor in the crash.
According to police reports, a Chevrolet Impala was traveling west near 5800 W. Indian School Rd. just before 6 a.m. yesterday when it veered over the center line and collided head on with a Mitsubishi Lancer. Ayala was a passenger in the back of the Lancer. Unfortunately, police say he was not wearing a seat belt when the accident happened. Ayala was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The drivers of both cars were suspected of impaired driving, police said. The Impala’s driver was 21 years old, and the Lancer’s driver was 20 years old. Neither the driver of the Impala nor his front seat passenger was wearing seat belts. Both were taken to a local hospital. They are each expected to survive their injuries. Meanwhile, police said they are still awaiting test results on the driver to determine whether he was impaired.
According to police, the driver of the Lancer was not wearing a seat belt when his airbag deployed. He was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said he was impaired and charges are pending.
The front seat passenger and one of the back seat passengers in the Lancer were taken to a local hospital with serious injuries, but were also expected to survive.
